Iv-Consult appointed to restore the Blokweer swimming pool in Alblasserdam
On the basis of periodic inspections to detect corrosion on the stainless steel wall of the Blokweer swimming pool, the municipality of Alblasserdam decided in 2021 to conduct further investigations into the structural safety of the pool. Iv-Consult conducted this investigation on behalf of the municipality and concluded that the chlorides in the pool had affected the stainless steel structure to such an extent that it had taken on an unpredictable character. The long-term safety of the swimming pool could, therefore, not be guaranteed. In addition, the concrete perimeter deck was not strong enough to absorb the horizontal water load from the pool.

After careful consideration from, among others, the Environmental Service, the municipality of Alblasserdam and the Service Municipality of Drechtsteden, the Blokweer swimming pool was closed in February 2022 to ensure the public's safety. Further investigations were then carried out to determine the current situation with greater certainty. Additional inspections were performed on the stainless steel and concrete structure, and restoration options and costs were determined. Following these investigations, potential solutions were devised to facilitate the pool's reopening. To properly assess the options, two of these were further elaborated. In close consultation with the local council, the municipality of Alblasserdam opted to replace the stainless steel structure with a concrete pool in combination with further increasing the pool's sustainability. In addition to preparing the technical documentation, Iv-Consult supervised the tendering phase and is currently part of the construction team undertaking the restoration work as quickly and efficiently as possible. Iv-Consult's primary role is to guarantee quality and help with queries or optimisations.

Following a thorough preparation phase, local contractor De Vries from Werkendam began the visible work on the pool last week. This is excellent news because if everything goes according to plan, the pool should be ready to reopen around the turn of the year or the beginning of next year! Although planning is essential, quality and safety are paramount. We are proud to be able to contribute our knowledge and expertise to the restoration of the swimming pool, a necessary facility for sport, health and education in Alblasserdam.
