Composite Superstructures Submarines

Fast and accurate measurements thanks to 3D laser scanning

The Walrus class submarines have a so-called semi-double hull, making the wiring, piping and tanks in the area between the pressure hull and the outer hull difficult to access. Nevesbu performed a feasibility study into the partial replacement of the steel outer hull with a composite material, so that maintenance and repair will be easier to perform, and less time consuming. In order to visualise possible discrepancies in the steel structure of the four submarines, the 3D laser scanning technique has been applied to create a detailed picture of the contours of the superstructures of the submarines.
