‘Het Carillon’ Community School Building

Multifunctional centre in a former town hall

The building used by ‘Het Carillon’ community school is the former town hall of Nieuw-Lekkerland. In order to accommodate all users, a gymnasium and two classrooms were added and the former town hall was reused as efficiently as possible. Repurposing an existing building is sustainable, but does involve certain restrictions. The design team weighed the cost, effectiveness and sustainability against each other and, despite the restrictions, succeeded in designing a healthy building. Accommodating public and commercial educational functions, public-interest functions and rooms for clubs and societies, the team managed to create a truly multifunctional centre.
