Beijing Wheel

World’s largest Ferris wheel

The functional requirements were brief and to the point: design a Ferris wheel 208 metres high, fitted with 48 capsules capable of holding up to 40 persons, with a desired rotating speed of three revolutions per hour. Building the Ferris wheel that symbolised the 2008 Olympic Games approached the frontiers of today’s engineering capabilities. External factors like extreme wind strengths and earthquakes had to be factored into the design.
