How to develop the right concept for offshore wind farm HVAC/DC substations Concept development Offshore wind Substation design

You don’t know what you don’t know

The realisation of offshore substations has learned to have its specific challenges. Near to none of the HVDC’s have been commissioned within planning and budget. The HelWin Beta HVDC Converter Platform, of which Iv-Offshore & Energy has made the topside design, was the one major HVDC project completed on time. What are those challenges that were faced and overcome, and how to prevent the surprises that result from the application of combinations of proven technology in new and alternative contexts? In the beginning ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’, but now we know. At the IQPC Offshore Windpower Substation Congress in Bremen, 21st to 23rd of August, we will present our useful tips for substation design.

Sharing knowledge is essential

The growth in offshore wind farms is enormous, almost anywhere in the world. Sharing knowledge is paramount to prevent repetitive learning curves in a relatively new market. Our clients and partners should benefit from experience that has been built up. We move to deeper water and higher power outputs, at the same time the era of governmental subsidies is over. Cost and time effective solutions are needed to maintain the support for the wind market. That is the purpose of initiatives like the IQPC Offshore Windpower Substation Congress.

Useful tips for substation design

Iv-Offshore & Energy has been at the front end of the wind industry, and was involved in many developments. We know how to develop the right concept for offshore wind farm HVAC/DC substations, and are pleased to share this knowledge at the IQPC Offshore Windpower Substation Congress. Topics such as key design drivers, layout, transport and installation aspects, and how to deal with the local rules and regulation will be addressed during Paul Heijkoop’s presentation ‘Essential front end design decisions in substation design’, given on Tuesday, 21 August. On Wednesday, 22 August, Mark Bloemsma will lead round table discussions on all aspects of offshore wind projects. And on Thursday, 23 August, Paul and Mark will entertain a workshop ‘Substation design: Innovative ideas and possible cost reductions’.
